New Things for the Kitchen

By Janet Jenson

All throughout the last ten or fifteen years before retiring I thought about what tools I would want to have on hand in order to be able to use them after retirement came, and how to go about collecting them ahead of time.

I saw older people who for one reason or another did not have as much disposable income after retirement as they found they needed, so I thought a lot about what a retired person might need and bought them ahead of time more or less like investments.

In truth, I never realized how much play time I would end up having in retirement, and how much more I'd be eating out with friends than staying home to cook, but I am still glad I planned ahead and moved to a place with a larger kitchen equipped with lots of specialized gadgets. Just because I'm not spending a lot of time in the kitchen does not mean that what I do spend should not be quality time.

Some of the well thought out appliances, of course, were obsolete by the time I actually retired, so after a few years of leisure time, I decided to upgrade several of them.

The first new thing I acquired was an Easy Green Auto Sprouter. It will pay for itself very fast considering the quantity of wheatgrass I grow and juice at home.

Wheatgrass juice costs $1.99 an ounce at the local juice bars. I have used other methods of growing wheatgrass at home, but the Easy Green is the least labor intensive and quickly produces a bountiful crop of greens. Below in the left hand photo from left to right are winter wheat, kamut, rye, buckwheat, and spelt growing in the Easy Green. The right hand photo shows them again, just one day later.

Contributor's Note

Another food I like to sprout in the Easy Grow is fenugreek, which in addition to being delicious, helps to regulate blood sugar.

These are all grasses for juicing except for the buckwheat lettuce which is good on sandwiches or salads.

Good intel. I have never heard of Wheatgrass juice before perhaps you could tell us more.

I also enjoyed looking around your website, you have some great articles and photos.

Thank you, Keith. Wheatgrass juice is about 70% chlorophyll, which is believed to improve the blood. In any case, it gives an instant burst of energy without any of the negative side effects of some energy drinks.

Wheatgrass is not the most delicious stuff in the world but often doctor mine up with other flavors. Other times I just drink it straight and then have something better tasting right after.

Great intel Janet. I love Wheatgrass and Fenugreek. Your website is very refreshing to read and to look at, thank you.

Glad to hear that somebody else likes fenugreek, as most of my friends, even those into sprouting had never heard of it. I like the sprouts fresh, but the greens are also good sauteed with potatoes for breakfast. The dried seeds also make a delicious tea.

I'm sure you're going to have a l-o-n-g retirement, drinking all those freshly sprouted juices! I believe that the Easy Green Auto Sprouter is about $200 - yes?

I'm planning on it, Andrew. I bought mine online recently for under $150. But as I have been juicing at home on and off for about 20 years, the commitment is there so I know it is well worth the price to me. It is by far the easiest system I have used. Of course, anyone into hydroponics could easily build their own for less money, but the Easy Green is all put together and looks nice on my counter top.

Thank you for sharing this valuable information on wheatgrass, Janet.
Most people don't seem to realize how they can improve their health, by growing food at home.
Best wishes.
Frederick
