Did You Know You Can Make Your Own Ginger Ale?

By Janet Jenson

This is a great project for kids and healthy, too. It should not be tried by anyone who should not be exposed to minute amounts of alcohol, however. Kids will probably get a kick out of calling this beverage ginger beer because that is its other name, but the fermented yeast creates only a fraction of one percent of alcohol. That would be less than one would probably get in a dessert made with whipped cream, but I thought I should mention it.

All you need to make your own ginger ale is some fresh ginger, a sweetener, yeast, pure water, and equipment and supplies that can be found in most households. For instance you will need a clean plastic soda bottle, a knife to peel the ginger, measuring spoons, and a funnel.

There are several articles online that show you exactly how to make home made ginger ale, but I think the best one is on the link below by Dr. Fankhauser from the Chemistry Department at Clermont College in Ohio.

I do not follow his recipe exactly. Mine has way less sweetener (I use agave nectar instead of sugar) and way more ginger. I also pulverize the ginger in my Magic Bullet blender instead of grating it, and finally, I make it in smaller batches, using bottles one liter or less.

Contributor's Note

Just be careful when opening the lid, because a lot of pressure builds up from the bubbles in this home-made beverage.

Along time ago my parents tried making ginger beer by the dozen in bottles. I remember the occasional exploding bottle then a series of explosions. I think one survived as that last explosion set of the rest of the bottles.

Yes, in those days the plastic bottles were not as readily available. I do not think I will ever try using glass bottles!

Now I want to try and make some, too... :)

If I had known how easy it is then I would have tried a long time ago!

Sounds like fun and tasty too. The agave nectar sounds like a great idea. (I have to admit I haven't tried it yet.)

Hi mulberry. That "Join my Fanclub" button you have on Squidoo is nifty. I love Squidoo and wish I had more time to play there. All of my lenses need updating
