A Kalanchoe in my AeroGarden

By Janet Jenson

Generally when we reproduce plants by taking stem or tip cuttings, it is advisable to cut off any buds or flowers in order for the plant to give its strength to the production of roots.

But in an AeroGarden it is tempting to leave the flowers on because they look so pretty and chances are the plant will root anyway. That is because the AeroGarden keeps them warm and oxygenated and gives them plenty of light.

Right now I have some Kalanchoe slips in my AeroGarden Deluxe. The mother plant came from a dollar store! I looked for a stem to cut that had no flowers, but every single one was full of blossoms. Since this plant is a succulent, it is generally advised to leave the slips out to form a callus before putting them in a rooting medium. However, I decided to see if they would take root without a callus since they are in liquid nutrient solution instead of potting soil.

Kalanchoes come in many different colors, but I think the one pictured below is the prettiest. When it gets a healthy root system, I will put the one pictured in a flowerpot with soil out on my deck. As soon as they get big enough, I will take more cuttings from each of my new plants, as I should like to have lots more of these pretty plants. However, if you have animals, you will want to know that this plant is toxic to house pets.

Many people just throw their Kalanchoes away when they stop flowering, because it takes special treatment to get them to bloom again. However I think that they are worth the extra care, and also that they make very pretty plants even when they are not flowering.

Contributor's Note

It is not necessary to buy expensive equipment to grow plants without soil. Many common houseplants can live for years in a vase of water if periodically fed a little plant food.

Love the image - and your articles about aerogardens in general - since I have no experiences with them (growing all of my stuff in soil, outside and in). I just might try an AeroGarden planter sometime soon... :)

Since I finally moved to a place with a small backyard I am learning to garden in soil for the first time, and now finding the AeroGardens useful for starting seedlings indoors to put out later. The plants really do grow 5 times faster in the AG Deluxe than out in the dirt...for the first month, anyway. The AGs are expensive and so are the supplies (replacement bulbs and pumps, etc), but I consider them a miracle of modern life.

They are very pretty. I can't say that I'm familiar with this plant, thanks for the educational intels.
